First Known Inhabitants

Picture
The first known inhabitants were examined by the archaeological record. Polynesians were the first people that put a foot on these islands. People said the Marquesas Group, to the north of Tahiti. The name "Hawaii"is a form of Hawaiki, the legendary name of the Polynesian homeland. No one knows what was the exact date so people think that it will remain forever. Their language indicates Hawaii's two distinct waves of the Polynesian Migration.

They traveled large doubled hulled canoes and brought pigs, dogs, chickens, taro, sweet potatoes, coconut, banana, and sugarcane with them. Also, they say Marquesas came a settlement in 600 or 700 and then to the Society Islands and migration at 1100. Then the Polynesians staked their knowledge of the sky and its stars, the sea and its currents, the flight of birds and many other natural signs. All of them came from the South Pacific. As many as 300,00 Hawaiians may have lived on the islands when the first Europeans arrived in the 18th century.
